The Awful Truth: Lying

Hypothetically speaking:

Isn't it funny how some people justify the things they do? What is even sadder is when they think that God isn't going to judge them by their actions! If you think that God is going to understand and forgive your actions without any repentance on your part, you are sorely mistaken. While God loves us all, he commands obedience and does not tolerate disobedience. And in case you don't grasp the idea of repentance it is pretty simple: you are sorry you did X and you don't do X any more. It really isn't a difficult concept to understand, unless of course you are looking for a way to work around it.

Since it was offered earlier in the week, I thought I would add some scripture and a little Dostoevsky to back up our style of parenting and our views on lying:

"The Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in men who are truthful." Proverbs 12:22

"These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination
unto Him: A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, an
heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to
mischief, a false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among
the brethren." Proverbs 6:16-19

"But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable [we have already established that God views liars in this way], and murderers, and whore mungers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and ALL liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death." Revelation 21:8

"Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him." Colossians 3:9-10

"A righteous man* hates lying, But a wicked man is loathsome and comes to shame. Righteousness guards him whose way is blameless, But wickedness overthrows the sinner." Proverbs 13:5-6 *And you wonder why Tobey will not tolerate lying.

"But outside (of heaven) are dogs and sorcerers and sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and whoever loves and practices a lie." Revelation 22:15

"The important thing is to stop lying to yourself. A man who lies to himself and believes his own lies becomes unable to recognise the truth, either in himself or in anyone else, and he ends up losing respect for himself as well as for others. When he has no respect for anyone, he can no longer love, and in order to divert himself, having no love in him, he yields to his impulses, indulges in the lowest forms of pleasure, and behaves in the end like an animal, in satisfying his vices - all this being caused by that man's continual lying to himself and to others."
Fyodor Dostoevsky: "The Brothers Karamazov"
