Presidential Camping Palooza

Last weekend we loaded up the truck and the Challenger and headed off on our annual Presidents' Day camping trip. Chewie's girlfriend, Tater Tot, came along for the fun. She had never been camping before and boy was she in for a treat. This year we went to Falling Waters State Park which is about an hour west of Tallahassee and about six hours from home. Which reminds me - it has now been a year since we adbucted rescued Pete from the wilds of Ocala on last year's camping trip. Happy Anniversary Sweety Petey Boy!

Tobey, Chewie, Tater Tot and Nappy

With the six hour drive and stopping for breakfast and lunch and all - we arrived around 4:30 and got to setting up the camp. Everyone was so tired from the drive and the set up that we all retired to our tents after the sun went down.

The next morning we headed over to the Falls.

Tater Tot and Chewie

The reason I chose this spot to camp was because Falling Waters boasts the highest waterfall in Florida. And of course the 'falls' depends on the amount of rainfall the area has received of late.

The whole gang

Now the weather forecast hinted at having a few showers. Alas that was not to be. We had a monsoon! The rain was so bad you could barely see your hand in front of your face.

And it knocked down the gazebo.

The firepit was surrounded by a two foot moat and every tent was flooded out. I had left my keys out and Chewie left his phone out and luckily despite finding them both in a puddle - they survived. Most of Sunday morning I spent at the local laundramat - good times. I have never seen so much camo and so many folks sportin' mullets in my life.

Later on we strolled down to the little lake and here is Tobey being as serious as ever.

Despite the trails looking to be pretty flat for Tater Tot - they were anything but and Chewie did some minor carrying of his lady and the guys took turns pushing her up and down the trail stairs.

Our final night was freezing cold. Remembering freezing our butts off last year in this neck of the woods - I brought electric blankets this time and we managed to stay nice and toasty. Tater Tot introduced us to Phase 10 and we played some Uno as well.

Oh and the s'mores. Tater Tot really liked the s'mores. Chewie even accidently invented a new s'more. It was nighttime and he really couldn't see what he was doing. They decided to make a double decker s'more with a Cookies n Cream chocolate bar and a Hershey bar. Only Chewie left the chocolate bar on the outside and the graham cracker on the inside when he constructed it. Tater didn't complain though - she loved her some s'mores!

Bombs away...

I almost forgot to mention one of our little excursions when we went camping. What with finding Pete and then me going back in the hospital - I forgot all about this.

This was right before we found Pete. We saw a sign for Big Scrub Campground and decided to check it out. I knew that we were in a heavily used ATV area and we traveled the dirt road for about 5 miles and never came to any camping/recreation area.

We did notice several signs alerting us to the fact that we were in a active bombing range. Tobey assured us that they didn't use live bombs....but I really didn't care and couldn't get out of there fast enough. I found some pretty cool video on YouTube if you want to take a peek.

So on the way back to civilization I spied this clay road:

And of course no little gate was going to stop us from trespassing adventuring...

I am not sure if this area was created from being bombed or construction or what but it was very neat.
The color of the clays varied from orange to purple and were simply beautiful.

So take some time to get off the beaten path - just don't do it in a bombing range no matter who tells you that they don't use live bombs....

Mrs. Oh and the Camping Maxine

I'm home. I'll write more about that later on - just know I am okay with nothing life threatening that they could find at least. Right now I wanted to share this with all y'alls.
Remember last month's camping picture of You Shall Not Plaid....I am sensing a camping theme of plaids here for Chewie. When I pointed his plaidness out to him he said when he gets married he was going to have a plaid wedding cake and would wear plaid to his wedding. Good luck with that one son.

And y'all have to click on the above picture. I noticed this gal while we were packing up camp on Monday. Is it me or is she the spittin' image of Maxine? Chewie thinks I am going to burn in hell for posing him just to get a picture of her....but come on: she is SO Maxine!
Thanks for all the well wishes and e-mails! Love you all.

Florida Caverns: The Review Part 3

First let me state that I am sorry I shopped the Old Navy's Black Friday special where I bought the boys several pairs of new sleep pants. I wrongly assumed they would only sleep in them and not wander the wilderness in a blaze of plaid.

So without further adieu: our last installment on the Florida Caverns and in no particular order

I love taking pictures of fire! I see two faces in the flames - do you?

I call this one: Fungi on a log.

The Blue Hole spring. The water was amazingly blue and natural!

Chewie was all about climbing down the ravines this trip. I am totally enamored with the cypress knees. They are like clouds - you can see just about anything in them.

Tobey and Chewie on the trails.

Do you remember that scene in Lord of the Rings where Gandalf confronts the Balrog...? I like to call this picture "You Shall Not Plaid".

One of the streams that runs through the park.

Tobey AND Chewie climbed down one of the ravines in the part of our trip where I worried one or both were going to break a leg.

Chewie kept begging to climb down and I finally caved in. Not to be outdone or the last one down, Tobey joined in on the fun of scarying the wits out of me.

You can see why I thought someone was going to break a limb or three.

My men.

What is with my hair? Oh right. We were camping and my eyeball was in my pocket.

We had such a good trip and the weather was wonderful until Monday morning when it began to rain. We ended up just rolling the tents up and shoving them in the van and we unpacked everything yesterday so it would dry out. We spent our evenings eatting smores and playing RISK where Tobey won on the first night and I wiped the board with them boys on the second night.

So I hope you have enjoyed my three-part report on the Florida Caverns and we are looking forward to camping again next month... a little closer to home this time.

Florida Caverns: The Review Part 2

Now the Ranger told us it was going to be cold...

Chewie is holding a piece of ice from an area the beavers dammed off.

And I was prepared with my electric blanket but not prepared for not having electricity. On the first night we lived to tell the tale - frozen toes, fingers and all. Thankfully there was the nearby Wal-Mart and we purchased a 100' extension cord to go with all of our other camping cords we brought. We plugged into the near by picnic shelter and voila: electric blankets worked and the boys were happy to have power to watch movies at night in their tent.

Basecamp Ohtobe

Tobey loves his new campin' grill with legs! We had hot dogs over the fire the first night, burgers the second night and steaks on our final night. Yum!

You can see our tent was on a slight slope. Tobey and I feared we were going to roll down the site by the end of the first night.

I had to include this shot of Chewie napping because the boys made mention 'that all the parents do when we go camping is sleep'. Well my friends - you can see we are not alone when it comes to taking a nice campin' nap.

What a difference from our last camping trip! The first night we were all by ourselves and look at that privacy! We did have neighbors the next two nights but the sites were spaced far enough apart it didn't encroach on our privacy.

The boys' tents. The first night they each slept in their own tent but after freezing to death and Nappy discovering a hole in his sleeping bag: they decided to bunk together for the rest of the trip.
I can't rave enough about this state park. It was beyond clean and the camp staff were wonderful - they came by the second morning to make sure we survived and fixed our water spigot as it froze solid over night. If you are ever in the area this is a park not to miss and even if you have to drive the six hours like we did, I highly recommend that you make the trek - you won't be disappointed.

Be sure to check back tomorrow for our last installment and pictures of our hike.

Florida Caverns: The Review Part 1

First of all thanks to everyone who has inquired on my eye. As you may know last Tuesday night Okie took a swipe at me - actually my bangs - and ended up taking a chunk out of my eye. The E.R. doctor was so impressed he even had Tobey take a look in the eyeball-thing-a-mag-jig so that he too could see my chunked out eye.

I missed a few days of work and laid in bed with a warm compress over my eye and I wish I could say it was better. It doesn't hurt near as bad though and I know it will just take time to mend. I was fairly certain that we would have to post phone our 3-day camping trip but when I woke up Friday morning I felt okay enough - I had my special eye drops with me and figured I could sit in a camping chair just as easily as lay in bed and be a total pain in the butt to everyone that loves me.

So a campin' we went and Tobey drove the 6 hours to the Florida Caverns. When we arrived the ranger informed us that we had a primitive site. I already knew that as I am the one that made the reservations. She then informed us that it was going to be cold and that there was NO electricity at the site. She gave us the option of another site but after the fiasco of Thanksgiving we opted for the primitive site with not a sole in sight. Yipee!

But I'll get into that bit tomorrow! I wanted to share the actual cavern part of our trip with you first. On Saturday after our usual camping trip to Wal-Mart we headed to the caverns which are located within the park. While the tour of the cavern is not free and I can't recall exactly how much the price was (I think about $8 each) it was well worth it.

We started out down a stair case into the caverns. The park lists this hike as moderate to strenuous and I was a tad worried how I would do with my back - but I was just fine. The hike back to the visitors center was rougher than the actual tour. Our tour guide was Joe and he did an excellent job of explaining the different parts of the cave to us and he even gave us our own Chilian Miners moment when he turned all the lights off inside the cave. Dark doesn't do it justice.

The great thing that sets the Florida Caverns apart from other caves I have hiked - you are up close and personal with all the stalactites and mites. Nothing is roped off, they simply ask that you don't touch anything. And the views were incredible.

The Wedding Cake
Each room had a special name and the first room we entered was the Wedding Cake room named for the above formation. Joe said several times a year they host weddings here.

Chewie, Tobey and Nappy
There were a few areas we had to duck walk through and the floor was a little slippery in spots but as you can see it was well worth the minor effort on our part.

Ribbons
I loved the ribbon formations. They looked so soft and fabric-like. One interesting fact we learned was that it takes 100 years to form one square inch of these formations. To know we were standing inside something nature and God has taken thousands upon thousands of years to form was breath-taking.

The exit
And this unassuming area is where we exited from the cavern. If you were walking along you probably wouldn't even give it a second look. Joe informed us the cavern was discovered in 1937 when a tree tipped over and exposed the cave below. While this specific cave showed no signs of human inhabiture there are several caves in the area where pottery has been found.
So while the drive was long and my eyeball was in my lap most of the trip - it was so well worth it just for the caverns alone. I give the Florida Caverns two thumbs way up and recommend it to all you dear readers.
More tomorrow on the camping part of our trip!

A campin' we will go....

We are going camping this weekend with Rockin' Rob up at Hillsborough River State Park. I am really looking forward to this getaway and hoping that Rob doesn't get up in the middle of the night and ditch us again because he is too hot, too cold, too buggy, not buggy enough. You get the picture.

The weather is supposed to be gorgeous with highs in the mid 60's and lows in the 40's. Perfect camping weather in my opinion. I already have the menus planned and the steaks are chilling out in the freezer until Thursday night marinade time. It feels like and actually has been ages since we have gone camping. Seems like life gets in the way of doing the things we really love. That has got to stop.

Anywho.

Tobey's brother did not get his trach installation as he now has a low-grade fever. He is still in a medically induced coma and they are hoping that today they can do the trach and wake him up. Keep your fingers crossed. The doctors are very positive that he is going to be fine but will need to stay a few weeks in ICU. So next time you hit your knees, please remember him and his family.

Ice, Ice Baby
Or more aptly titled:
Papa: The Man, The Myth, The CEO of ICE

I am sure this story will not come out half as funny as the reality of it was, but I am going to try to do it justice anyway.

About two years ago Tobey and I bought a canoe. I was so excited we finally had a canoe. Memories of my childhood flooded back and all the times we had out fishing on that old canoe. I was looking forward to my children sharing in the same experiences. We had looked around at the only store we could find that sold canoes in our area and we settled in on this one from Mad River Canoes:

Now don't let us fool you, we are not novices. We sat in the canoe at the store to get a feel for it and everything. The salesperson even encouraged us to do so. That canoe sitting on the showroom floor was marvelous, it was just about perfect. We all took turns sitting in it. We pretended to paddle. We pretended to fish. Heaven I tell ya, she was just heaven. There was just one tiny, little thing we didn't contemplate. Just a little teeny-weenie thing really. The sales room floor was not made of water. Ergo, the ride we received from the canoe on the test drive of the salesroom floor was nothing like the ride we would get in the wilds of nature, in yanno like water.

Who knew? Certainly not us.

We make the deal and purchase the canoe. But canoes are a lot like a new outfit. You can't just get the canoe or say a new dress without accessories. You have to get paddles or shoes. You have to get special seats or earrings. You have to get straps to tie the thing to the Shrek mobile. And finally you have to get these styrofoamy blocks to hold the canoe off of the top of the van. Cha-ching. Cha-Ching. Cha-Ching. Oh and don't forget we decided to do a little plastic surgery on Shrek and got a roof rack installed solely to hold the canoe up on.

After we spent $4 million dollars, we took the Titanic with us on a few camping trips. The first trip was to Parramore's Campground where the river was running so swift it was almost impossible to even launch the thing. It didn't help that some old guy camper insisted on helping try to launch the canoe, sideways he insisted. She went in the water that one time during a 4 day camp out and never touched water again that whole extended weekend. Everyone was too scared to get in her because she was the most unstable thing on the planet. Try and picture Sarah Palin as a canoe and you will get the picture. Pretty yes, usable no and stable: not on your life!

Our next trip with the Titanic canoe was when we went camping with Papa at Collier State Park, a.k.a. mosquito alley. This camp out was such a nightmare that Papa and his posse bugged out early. Bugged. Get it? Bugged. I crack myself up sometimes. Anywho - You could see the mosquito's coming at you in massive, gray, buzzing sheets of fleshing stinging owiness. We ran out of bug spray twice. It was also just a tad warm. Warm and buggy do not make for a happy Mrs. Oh camping. Top that was Papa bugging out, the weekend was a complete wash out. We offered for Papa to stay and ride home with us, but no, Papa couldn't get out of Collier fast enough.

During his short stay at Collier, we headed from our site to Papa's and saw this:

Yes ladies and gentlemen, that is an a/c unit on top of a Styrofoam cooler blowing into the tent window. I made Tobey pretend like I was taking picture of him when all I really wanted was a picture of that window shaker on the cooler. Redneck ingenuity never ceases to amaze me. That tent had more air in it than a balloon at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

But I have digressed. Back to Papa and the Titanic er canoe.

We took a day trip with Papa to Weedon Island.

Tobey and Barbie

We hiked the trails while Tobey and Barbie took the canoe out for a spin. At the end of the day and after much begging from Papa, we let him take Chewie and Barbie out in the canoe. I knew there would be trouble from the get-go.

Chewie, Barbie and Papa aboard the "Ship of Dreams"

Papa and the kids loaded the canoe up and we shoved them off. They began to paddle along and head under the pier. Where they hit the pilings, several times. Apparently none of them could steer to save their lives. Couple that with an unstable canoe and you got a recipe for disaster. Titanic level disaster.

They finally cleared the pier and head off into the mangroves. A short while later we see them coming. In the boat lane. Yanno, the lane where the big, yacht-type, gas powered boats travel. I was waiting for them to crash into one of the luxury liners. Luckily they averted any such accident but just barely. Apparently God had a little something else planned for them. While in the boat lane some nice passengers on one boat that rode past them, asked if they needed a tow though, wasn't that nice?

So they paddled down stream again and we lost site of them in the mangroves. Tobey and I were enjoying ourselves on the dock when his cell phone rings.

It's Barbie.

Barbie who is in the canoe.

Barbie is scared the canoe is going to flip over.

Tobey advised her to get off the phone and sit still. Good advice. Glad she had a phone to call us on and get said advice. Papa left his phone with me, his camera though...well, he'll have to complain tell you about that.

A few minutes after Barbie calls, we see the tip of a canoe appearing from a grove of mans. Then quite suddenly the canoe prairie-dogged back into the grove and out of sight. This happened a few times and Tobey says, "Here they come". After watching the canoe dog back and forth it ventured out enough for us to see that no one was in the front of the thing. Tobey then yells, "That's our canoe!" I replied with an ever observant, "That can't be our canoe, no one is in it". Tobey says, "They flipped the canoe" and runs from the pier to the launching area. I don't know what he thought he could do at this point. As for me, I decided to take pictures.

The final prairie dog maneuver out of the mangroves.

Yep, Papa, Chewie and Barbie managed to flip the canoe. Chewie and Barbie's cell phones were ruined as was Papa's not-so-super-model camera. In the millions of times I have been in a canoe I have never had one flip on me. Ever. Papa must have some mad canoe skills or maybe Barbie's 13 car accidents jinxed them. Who knows?

Papa tells the tale of hoisting Barbie up by the waist of her shorts to get her back in the canoe. Once we saw them in the canoe we knew Papa was giving them the what-for. Neither Chewie or Barbie were moving at all and Papa was doing all the paddling.

Thankfully, no one was hurt. Barbie did sustain a few cuts on the bottom of her feet and we heard her complain about that just as long as Papa complained about losing his camera. Which was a very long time. Heck, I still hear him moan about it from time to time even today.

Needless to say, we hate that canoe and it will one day be on Craigslist for some poor soul to purchase. I'll even set it on the ground for them to try out, so they can see how stable it is. Maybe they will be stupid enough to faux paddle like we did. In the meanwhile, be sure to copy this logo for use on your blogs, facey spacey's or stationary. It is the logo for Papa's club ICE where he is President and CEO.
